Since the middle of XXth Century agriculture has become more intensive with an high degree of mechanization and crops-livestock specialization. Therefore more complex systems\, such as “agroforestry”\, were rapidly abandoned. However\, a new approach to farming seems to re-discover agroforestry. The reintroduction of this old farming system in modern food production allows to obtain several benefits: an increasing in yields due to the interaction between crops and trees or shrubs and livestock\, products diversification\, a more stabilized microclimate\, improved soil fertility and environment biodiversity\, a better quality of ground water\, a more efficient carbon stocking and an higher landscape value. Recent scientific investigations (made possible by EU funded projects such as AFINET and AGFORWARD) produced interesting results analysing different agroforestry systems\, and the EU partnership for innovation in agriculture (EIP-AGRI) supported a focus group of experts on this subject. Institutions of  Italy and Veneto contributed actively with scientific and demonstrative actions.
